Relativistic Theory of Atoms and Molecules
Preface to the 1975 edition
During the recent years it has become evident that a thorough discussion of
the quantum chemistry of the latter half of the periodic table does require
a relativistic treatment. Therefore the post-graduate training of a theoretical
chemist should include some training in this field.
The present lectures are an attempt to provide such an introduction. They were
prepared and given in December 1974 during my stay as a guest professor at
the Theoretical Chemistry Department of the Free University of Amsterdam.
It is a pleasure to thank Professor P. Ros and Dr. H.B. Jansen for the invitation
and for many critical discussions.
I have drawn heavily from the lectures of Y. Ahmavaara, P.W. Nielsen and
G. Thomas whose courses at the Universities of Turku, Aarhus and Helsinki
I hade the privilege to follow. A literature list of several other sources
is given overleaf.
