     Dear Professor Hess,

I obtained your e-mail address from your website. I wanted to make
you aware of the United States Department of Energy's research
program, called the Environmental Management Science Program. This
program is making a solicitation of research proposals for 1997. The
solicitation can be viewed on the World Wide Web at

     http://www.er.doe.gov/production/grants/fr97_03.html

and our current research projects can be viewed at

     http://www.doe.gov/em52/science-grants.html

I am specifically notifying your program because of our need for heavy
element chemistry to solve some of the difficult challenges faced by
organizations attempting to manage nuclear waste and remediate
radioactive contamination in the environment. You will note in the
solicitation a discussion of many actinide chemistry issues,
particularly in the background section under "Radioactive Waste
     Tanks."

If you decide to participate, please note that the solicitation
requests preapplications by January 15. Full applications must be in
by April 16. Fax and e-mail preapplications are NOT acceptable. Full
applications MAY be submitted without preapplications if you wish.

     Sincerely,

     Gordon Roesler, Ph.D.
