The programme is intended to strengthen the in- dicated "field" and to facilitate interactions between European scientists concerned with related topics. The 'Steering Committee' of the programme has at present the following members: G. Dalu (ESF) J.P. Desclaux (Grenoble) K. Faegri (Oslo) I.P. Grant (Oxford) B. Hess (Bonn, Vice-Chairman) J. Karwowski (Torun) P. Pyykko (Helsinki, Chairman) K. Schwarz (Vienna) A. Sgamellotti (Perugia). ----------------------------------------------------------------- (1) Support As mentioned in the previous newsletter, there is a budget available for the support of the aims of the program. (a) Anyone who wishes ESF-support for a W o r k s h o p to be organized is requested to submit a formal proposal (for details see below) before May 1st, 1993, to Pekka Pyykko or myself (see Address List below). A proposal should contain the following information: - name(s) of the organizer(s) - topic of the workshop - probable place (town/country) and proposed date of the event - names of possible speakers; however, these should at this point NOT be contacted yet, because there is no guarantee that a submitted proposal will be granted! - approximate budget, indicating how much is requested from the ESF and how much will be obtained from other sources. For example, for a workshop with 12-15 participants that lasts for 2.5 to 3 days a total budget of FF 60'000 (French Francs) may be anticipated. This assumes that per participant about FF 1'800 are needed for accomodation and meals and about FF 2'200 for travelling (in average); hence, 15 x 4'000 = FF 60'000.- Please formulate your budget in French Francs (FF). (b) There is also support available for shorter visits by doctoral students and also for senior scientists. We envisage visits lasting 2-4 months which will give the holders time to acclimatize to the methods used in the host laboratory. The time is long enough for useful exchange of ideas and short enough for those whose responsibilities make it difficult to absent themselves from their home group for an extended period. Please specify the names of the scientists involved, the aproximate date of the visit and the project that is to be worked on, and supply a budget that indicates how much is requested from ESF. The decisions will be taken at the steering committee meeting on occasion of the first Euroconference connected with the programme (see below) in June 1993. >>> Please be prepared to write a report on the work that has been done on behalf of the project that has been funded by ESF <<< * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * (2) REHE newsletter Please send material >preferably by e/mail< that enables us to fill the following topics in forthcoming newsletters --- C O N F E R E N C E N E W S 'Conference News' (in general they should NOT overrun about 1 page) may be provided by organizers or their scientific secretaries. -- For meetings and workshops supported by ESF the submission of such a report is a m u s t . To facilitate my job the reports should be forwarded to my attention via E-mail. --- European Research Conference on Relativistic Effects in Haevy-Element Chemistry and Physics: Approximate Relativistic Methods in Electronic Structure Calculations De Haan, near Oostende, Belgium, 10-14 June, 1993 Chairmen: E. J. Baerends (Amsterdam) and H. Stoll (Stuttgart) Preliminary Programme: The purpose of this first European Research Conference on Relativistic Effects in Heavy-Element Chemistry and Physics is to describe, compare and evaluate approximate methods for determining relativistic contributions to the properties of atoms, molecules and solids. Such methods include relativistic semi-empirical approaches, relativistic pseudopotentials to be used in formally non-relativistic valence-only calculations, relativistic density-functional schemes as well as one- and two-component all-electron ab-initio techniques. A mutual checking and validation of results obtained by the various methods should lead to a better understanding of their range of applicability. A critical comparison against more accurate (four-component) relativistic treatments should lead to a better understanding of the fundamentals on which these methods are based. The following scientists have been invited to give presentations: G.B. Bachelet (Rome) W. Kutzelnigg (Bochum) E.J. Baerends (Amsterdam) C.M. Marian (Bonn) N.E. Christensen (Aarhus) P. Pyykko (Helsinki) J.P. Daudey (Toulouse) N. Roesch (Muenchen) M. Dolg (Stuttgart) A.J. Sadlej (Lund) W.C. Ermler (Hoboken, NJ) K. Schwarz (Wien) B. Fricke (Kassel) W.H.E. Schwarz (Siegen) O. Gropen (Tromsoe) P. Schwerdtfeger (Auckland) B.A. Hess (Bonn) L. Seijo (Madrid) J. Karwowski (Torun) U. Wahlgren (Stockholm) A discussion session (I.P. Grant, Oxford) as well as poster sessions will be organized. The fee for this conference will be 3700 FF in a single room. (Fees will be reduced by 300 FF if payment is arranged more than three weeks before the conference).
